1/2 Day HiSet Program

My name is Matt Watson, and I have been with the Bossier Parish school system for 5 years now. I am 31 years old, and have settled into my life with the help of my wonderful girlfriend, Brianna, daughter Izzy, our newest puppy, Rivers, and Steve the dog. I am a graduate of Louisiana Tech, and a proud supporter of their athletics program. Also, I recently graduated with a MAT degree from Northwestern State University. I have worked exclusively in the alternative school setting since being hired 5 years ago, and thus far, have enjoyed it immensely.

I look forward to helping all of my students accomplish their goals in and out of my classroom.

BEC offers a half-day program to assist students who qualify and desire to take the HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) at age 16 or 17. To qualify for the HiSET program, students must meet the following prerequisites:

  • Score at or above the high school level on the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education);
  • Be capable of completing the program within 120 days;
  • Agree to abide by all BEC policies, including the dress code policy;
  • Possess no record of serious or repeated conduct problems at the home school;

Students who qualify and reach the required level on the TABE will complete the battery of practice HiSET tests, which is approximately half the length and similar to the actual HiSET tests. Upon successful completion of the practice tests, students will register through BEC to take the HiSET at the Bossier Parish Community College's Testing Center (Building D, Room 203).

The HiSET consists of five components:

 Language Arts – Reading

Language Arts – Writing (written essay included)

Social Studies

You must score an 8 in ALL subjects, (Language Arts-Reading, Language Arts-Writing + an Essay, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies), with a cumulative score of at least 45 to pass.

*You have THREE attempts each calendar year (Jan. 1 – Dec. 31) to pass each of the HiSET tests.*

*At the time of registration, students must pay a testing fee of $90 and possess a valid state-issued picture ID/Driver's License.  For more information on the HiSET program, please call 318-549-7053 (Mr. Watson).

Note: Half day sessions times are 7:50-10:45 (AM) and 11:15-1:55 (PM). Parents must provide transportation for students attending the half-day program.  Students with their parents’ consent, may voluntarily disenroll from the program at any time, or be subject to dismissal for insufficient progress and/or failure to comply with BEC's policies and procedures.

Daily Expectations

Come to class properly dressed, on-time, and be respectful to yourself, your peers, and the staff members of BEC.

Work diligently to complete assigned work (work at whichever pace best suits you for your success).

Attend class regularly.

Complete your work, test out, and move onto the next step in your life.
